Huntington Beach in California hosted the second annual Surf City Surf Dog tournament at the weekend, and a host of mutts turned out to hang 20. The surfing competition was just one of a weekend of events but, for obvious reasons, it's the event that attracts the most spectators. While the dogs appeared to petrified by the crashing waves, their owners insisted that - just like their human counterparts - dog surfers loved the thrill and couldn't wait to get on their boards.

Thankfully, experts back the owners up - after all, the weekend's events raised money for the Orange County Human Society. The Surf Dog event was only a part of a weekend-long calendar of parades and performances for beach mutts and their people. Festivities actually began on Friday with a 'Yappy Hour' and a 'High Maintenance Bitch' dog fashion show. Other events throughout the weekend had similarly inventive names. The fashion show models - which were dogs available for adoption - strut the runway at the Shorebreak Hotel wearing doggie couture from a puppy boutique in Seattle that gave the fashion show its name.
The weekend concluded with a more traditional dog walk along the beach, a canine costume contest, and the 'Hot Diggity Dog Expo' of pet products from more than 40 pet-related vendors and organisations.
