TWO of the country’s leading mountain bikers will lock horns during one of the biggest sporting events in Rossendale.

Residents will be given the chance to challenge World Cup riders Rowan Sorrell and Ali Clarkson at the Adrenaline Gateway single track race, at Lee Quarry, Bacup.

Enthusiasts now regard The Pennine Lancashire Adrenaline Gateway as one of the best venues in the UK for mountain biking.

Members of the county council also believe that Rossendale could soon become a hub for extreme sports.

County Coun Michael Green, cabinet member for economic development, said: “We believe we can carefully use the landscape and resources so that this area can become the adventure sports capital of the north.

“In doing this, our intention was always to develop the offer of tourism, encourage commercial opportunities, and spread the economic benefit to the area.

"Lee Quarry has already become one of the best trail centres in the world and we know that mountain bikers love these facilities.

“When we have held this event previously, hundreds of cycling enthusiasts have come along, either to take part, or to watch various events.”

The single track event, to be held on Saturday and Sunday, will consist of three different disciplines, including trials, downhill, and cross country.

Tony Lund, countryside officer for the county council, said: “It’s great that we are able to attract riders of the calibre of Rowan and Ali to Rossendale, but anyone will be able to come along and compete during the weekend.

“Local riders will be able to rub shoulders and pick up tips from some of the best in the country, the equivalent of playing with your pub team at Old Trafford against Manchester United.” Plans to link Lee Quarry with Crag Quarry for more single track events have been announced by the county council in recent months.
