Jeff Clark confirmed to me last night that his new group, Mavericks Invitational Inc., has been awarded a Limited Commercial Activity Permit by the San Mateo County Harbor District to run a surf contest at Maverick’s. The only issue of contention at the meeting was the Board of Commissioner’s decision to increase the cost of the permit from the originally agreed to amount of $20,000 to $30,000, which has reportedly upset some members of Mavericks Invitational Inc. Regardless, Clark said the group is happy to have control of the contest. Clark will officially be the Contest Director of the Mavericks Big Wave Invitational.

The Godfather of Maverick’s Jeff Clark and a group comprised of Maverick’s surfers and local Half Moon Bay community members are set to take over running a surf contest at the famed Maverick’s big wave surf location. Clark is leading an organization called the Mavericks Invitational Inc. that is comprised of a merging of two groups that were previously fighting for control of a surf contest at Maverick’s.
With all the Maverick’s surfers on board, and with Clark set to reclaim his longtime title of Contest Director, the next step to ensuring that the Mavericks Big Wave Invitational can run this winter is approval by the Board of Commissioners of the San Mateo County Harbor District to issue a Limited Commercial Activity Permit, which is required in order to run a surf contest at Maverick’s. The Board of Commissioners will make this decision as early as Wednesday, September 21st, where the issue is scheduled to be addressed at a meeting held at the Municipal Services Building, 33 Arroyo Drive in South San Francisco, CA at 7 PM. The public is encouraged to attend the meeting and voice any questions and concerns, or to show support for the Mavericks Big Wave Invitational.
The following is a press release issued by the Mavericks Invitational Inc., which fully explains the position of the new group and what people can expect if the Mavericks Big Wave Invitational runs this winter.
